Through the Fire: 3 Fashion Designers Who Came Back from Failure

Everyone faces failures at some point in life. There are no exceptions, even those who are born with a silver spoon in their mouth. Social status and financial standings too aren’t enough to shelter someone from the grasp of failure.

A lack of success is a never ending presence which looms on the back of everyone, rich or poor, famous or not. Whether in different fields or disciplines, breakdowns are an inevitable part of life and existence itself.

Dropping from the heights of success to the lowest grounds of failure is painful, and not all can take it. In the world of fashion where the stakes are high, a famous person can go from cloud nine to rock bottom in a matter of days. Here are some of those designers who weathered it all and defied their fates.

Marc Jacobs

“We’ve been bankrupt, we’ve been fired,” he said. “We didn’t hang up our hat.”

A staple in today’s fashion industry, Marc Jacobs wasn’t always the biggest draw on the big fashion catwalks and circuits. Being successful straight out of schooling, Marc Jacobs won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble in 1984. Not only winning a prestigious award, but he also holds the distinction of being the youngest to have won such an award.

His greatest blunder turned out to be a blessing in disguise. In 1992, Marc Jacobs began designing for fashion elite Perry Ellis. Jacobs with his unique personality and preferences debuted a grunge collection that utilized boots from Doc Marten and plaid shirts. His works received negative reviews that were enough for Perry Ellis to fire him from his job.

From the fashion perspective, Marc Jacobs was already dead. However, Louis Vuitton saw small signs of life and decided to name him as creative director. Since then, Marc Jacobs never look back, as Louis Vuitton skyrocketed him back to fame. Today, Marc Jacobs isn’t just a staple. He’s also an innovator.

Alexander McQueen

“Give me time, and I’ll give you a revolution.”

Before his failure at Dior, Alexander McQueen was the creative director at Givenchy. In his debut show, his dramatic designs were mockingly called a failure. His designs gave the elites of the fashion world a shock.

Alexander McQueen took all the negatives in, even accepting and calling his previous work as “crap.” He then made a comeback just five weeks after his failed debut at London, where he presented his eponymous collection. It became an instant success, and since then he became one of the most sought-after designers in the fashion industry.

Known as the King of Gothic beauty and darkness, Alexander McQueen continues to make strides in the fashion world even after his untimely death in 2010. After experiencing a lot of failures, Alexander McQueen is the epitome of perseverance and tenacity.

Hedi Slimane

“I’m most interested in that moment when my entire perspective changes, and I have to reconsider everything.”

Hedi Slimane’s tenure in YSL or Yves Saint Laurent wasn’t always a cakewalk. Way back in 2012, Hedi Slimane and the PR team of YSL made a lot of arguments on whether to drop the “Yves” from the trademark company name.

As the name change met a lot of negative looks within the enterprise, Hedi Slimane’s California Rock themed work did not provide any spark or interest within the YSL because it was too far out from the group’s signature jackets. Reviews from the media also weren’t confident as they also viewed the collection as a failure.

His collection would bar the press from seeing his collection up close, but instead, his closest friends owned the front row. This move proved sour for some media outlets and considered him as “nothing new” or “overrated.”

Since then, differences of the name change fixed itself internally, and Hedi Slimane learned to mend his relationship with the media. His presence within YSL is similar to PB and J (Peanut Butter and Jelly), the perfect marriage between company and director. Now his collections are met with an excitement every season.

Takeaway

Hedi Slimane, Marc Jacobs, and Alexander McQueen prove that even death cannot prevent people from breaking free from the chains of failures.  With enough dedication and tenacity, a person can come back from failure even in the direst of situations.

The designers mentioned above just show how failure affects everyone. In the world of high stakes fashion where one mistake is the same with death, failure is a particularly terrifying aspect within. Although failure is not always art of the success equation for everyone, it’s important that you know where and who to look up when you’re down or uncertain, take your cue from French Connection for example, the epitome of success for fashion retail online.

DIO is the New DIY (Design it Online)

With the internet’s prevalence, more and more customers are turning toward it to design their latest creation.

The way things used to be were:

Find inspiration on Pinterest to DIY some home decor for your house.

Attempt (and let’s be honest, fail, most of the time) to create said home decor and use up most of your day or week.

“Doing It Yourself” often takes a long time, with many supplies needed and lots of instructions if you want it to turn out right.

Or, you could shop on Etsy to find the unique pieces that DIY-ers create in their garages.

Nowadays, you can find pretty much anything online with a “customize” button.

Clothing, home decor, shoes, tapestries, stickers, etc.

Anything!

So why would you want to DIO (design it online)?

I mean….

Why wouldn’t you?

Here are some reasons you should turn to custom sites to design your next piece of merchandise.

You Can Design From Your Couch

No Marshall’s trips, complicated instructions, or time needed!

You don’t even have to move from your comfy couch to design your next t-shirt, blanket, or whatever it may be.

On these custom design websites, you can choose ink colors, garment colors, and even the style of product.

Some even let you upload your own design!

A mom who is in charge of ordering t-shirts for the next event at her kids’ school can customize the shirts all from the comfort of her own home (maybe with a glass of wine).

Or a college girl can design her own sorority letters or philanthropy shirt from her dorm room.

Doing the Breast Cancer walk in your town?

Design a shirt for you and your family to wear to the event.

You’ll be decked out in pink, and rocking your own t-shirts.

The possibilities are truly endless when it comes to custom items.

Which brings us to our next point…

Endless Possibility

Want your own unique Star Wars tee?

You can do that.

Want your child’s face on a mug?

You can do that too.

Sites like Custom Ink or Vistaprint make it possible to put (quite literally) anything on a t-shirt, mug, or print.

For any occasion, you can DIO.

It kind of makes me want to attend more events, just so I can design shirts.

Anyone else guilty of this?

If you’re struggling for inspiration, just visit Pinterest to see what route you want to take.

Or, the helpful service team at these companies can help you design or decide what you want your item to look like!

Not only that, but also you’ll have something uniquely yours that you know no one else will have.

Unique Products

You know that once you DIO, you’ll have something that is all yours.

Plus, you will take more pride in it because you designed it!

We come across a lot of products online that we don’t like, or things we would change a little bit.

With designing it online, you can tweak that one thing you don’t like about a product to make it fit your personality.

There are also sites like Society6; while you can’t fully design the item, there are thousands of products to choose from that are designed by artists from all over the world.

In a way, that’s like designing it online.

There are so many products available for people of all kinds.

And because of this, you get a really cool product that no one else has.

See, the way most of these custom t-shirt companies make their shirts is through screen printing, digital printing, or embroidery.

Screen printing enables ordering in quantities, so this would be the route to go if you are ordering for a large group.

For every design, the printers create a “screen”, which is basically a stencil for each color in the design.

They can screen print on pretty much anything, since the process is done by hand!

Digital printing does not require any minimums, so they can print just one shirt with your unique design.

And lastly, embroidery:

This is self-explanatory, but it’s pretty cool that you can create a custom embroidered design or your initials, a monogram, a small design, etc.

Designing It Online (DIO) is the new Do It Yourself (DIY) for many reasons. It’s easy, fast, and uniquely yours.

You know no one else will have the same design as you.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to designing your own products.

Lessons from the fall rain

I’m beginning to appreciate the many layers of fall. It seems like yesterday that I was moping about the heat of summer leaving us. It packed its shades and sunscreen and just flat out left our country seemingly overnight, leaving leaves all over the place in complete haste. The nerve! I guess that meant while I moped about being home […]

Tips and Guidelines to Installing a Split System Air Conditioner

The installation of a split system air conditioner is a crucial task. If done properly, the AC unit will offer you optimum performance. But, if the split system air conditioner installation is not carried out efficiently, you will not receive the desired cooling effect and there will be frequent breakdowns too. If you want to save money on the repairs and maintenance, you will have to choose only professionals for installing the AC unit. Do not leave the task to a novice but always summon a reliable technician for the installation work. Becoming a professional in installing split system AC needs time and practice. There can be refrigerant or gas leakage in case the installation is not done properly. Various factors need to be taken into consideration when you are installing a split AC.

Initially, you need to determine the exact location of the indoor unit and the outdoor unit and only after that the steps for split system air conditioner installation may be initiated. As the name suggests, the indoor unit is installed inside the room and must be placed just above the bed. This way you will get the maximum cooling effect. But, if you do not want chilled air, just change the direction of louvers. When it comes to the height of the indoor unit, it should be nearly 10 feet above the floor level. This way, the cool air will be circulated used to cool the room and not the hot roof. This indoor unit should also be conveniently accessible so that it becomes possible to change the filters. On the other hand, the outdoor unit can be placed or installed in the open terrace. The air must be allowed to flow freely over the condenser and the compressor.

Installation Tips for The Outdoor Unit of The Ac

The surface where you install outdoor unit should be rigid enough to avoid any vibration. If there is vibration in the outdoor unit, it will lead to excessive noise and may cause breakage of copper tubing, leading to the leakage of refrigerant. It is important to keep the outdoor unit at a height which is more than the height of indoor unit. If the outdoor unit of the AC is below the indoor unit, the compressor power will be used in pulling up the refrigerant against the gravity which will reduce the performance of the compressor. Most outdoor units tend to be silent and so you need not worry about the noise produced from it. As the internal components of the outdoor unit are shielded, the unit stays safe from climatic conditions.

The Tilt Angle of The Indoor Unit

When you fix up aluminum bracket onto the walls, you need to make sure that the bracket is given some tilt angle. This allows the angle of the indoor unit to remain at a proper angle to permit an unrestricted flow of condensed water through the drain pipe. The indoor and outdoor unit needs to be installed away from sunlight to attain optimum cooling effect.

The Placement of Outdoor Unit Should Be Perfect

You should place the outdoor unit on a rigid or flat surface. The outdoor unit constitutes the key components like condenser, compressor and fan motor. If you do not do so, there will be vibration to hinder the performance of AC unit. This can lead to breakage of pipes, the leakage of refrigerant and may cause condenser to damage.

When it comes to cooling, the distance between indoor and outdoor unit matters and has an impact on cooling. For split system air conditioner installation, you must always consider hiring a professional.
