You should place the outdoor unit on a rigid or flat surface. The outdoor unit constitutes the key components like condenser, compressor and fan motor. If you do not do so, there will be vibration to hinder the performance of AC unit. This can lead to breakage of pipes, the leakage of refrigerant and may cause condenser to damage.
